Whoever controls the media also controls opinions and attitudes of the people and there is little can be done to rectify this. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
It is an irrefutable fact that mass media plays a decisive and indisputable role in mobilizing the view and stand of the people. Here it is stated that the opinion of the people in society is largely moulded by the media and it has an inescapable influence on people. Even though media exerts a crucial role in the opinion mobilization of the society, I do not think that they are fatalistic in nature.
Admittedly, media plays a major role in forming the opinion of society. That is, people obtain the latest news around the world by means of media, both the electronic and print. In many cases instead of providing the factual and true information, media fabricate stories to satisfy their vested business interest. For instance, visual media in Kerala create some sensational news each day in order to increase their rating and people are under the vile influence of this media aggression. Therefore, many people get misguided by this sensational news manufactured to suit the business interest of the media.
However, the influence of media on people is not fatalistic and inescapable in character. If the majority of the people approach an issue in a certain way, the media will be forced to circulate news reflecting the real sentiment of the people. Otherwise, people will boycott such media and it would eventually affect their business interest and profit. For example, notwithstanding the unconditional support from the media, Hilary Clinton could not win the American presidential election, as the sentiment and mood of the people were against the ruling party.
By way of conclusion, even though media plays a vital role in forming and formulating the opinion of the people, I do not consider it as ultimate and final. If the news and views circulated through the media do not reflect the people's actual sentiment and wish, such news will be discarded outright.
