Millions of dollars are spent on space research every year. Some people argue that the money should be spent on improving living standards on Earth. Do you agree or disagree?
It is a fact that a huge amount of money is utilized for space research every year. Some people opine that this should be used for improving the standard of living of the people on earth. I consider that the priority of any government should be to meet the basic needs of the people. However, space research is indispensable an area of scientific intervention, even when it does not yield immediate benefits.
Undoubtedly, the priority of any government should be to satisfy the basic necessities of the people. For instance, people in many countries, especially in Asia and Africa, are suffering from various maladies including poverty, malnutrition, lack of health care facilities and illiteracy. Naturally, the governments of these countries should give the top-most priority to address such issues as the above-mentioned and solve them with immediate effect. Therefore, doing space research at the cost of highly pressing issues such as food, shelter and healthcare is unjustifiable.
However, space research is an important area which deserves attention. If the minimum necessities of the people are met, governments can think of spending money on space research. Had the governments not used a fair share of money on space research, the latest explosion in information technology and communication devices would have been impossible. So if and when the basic requirements of the people are satisfied, spending money on space research is acceptable, as it would yield benefits and results of a nature that will make human life more worthwhile and enjoyable.
In conclusion, in my opinion, the governments should give utmost importance for satisfying the basic needs of the people. However, allocating a portion of the money in the public exchequer for promoting space research and allied matters of scientific significance cannot be seen as anything inappropriate or misplaced.
